James Madison Scores First 2020 Verbal from Pennsylvania 3A State Champion Cameron Gring
NEW COMMIT: James Madison University has received their first verbal commitment for the fall of 2020 from Reading, Penn. backstroker Cameron Gring. Gring’s best 100 back time is already faster than the school record.
Primarily a backstroker, Gring owns the U.S. Open cut in the 100 back with three additional Winter Juniors standards and does her club swimming with Reading YMCA. She most recently competed at YMCA Nationals where she took fifth in the 100 back and seventh in the 200 back. This past summer, she placed eighth in the 50m back and 12th in the 100m back at YMCA LCM Nationals.
Also competing for Muhlenberg High School, Gring is a six-time Pennsylvania 3A State Championship finalist and has earned both NISCA and USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors. She was the 100 back runner-up and took ninth in the 200 IM as a junior after finishing first and sixth, respectively, in those events during her sophomore season.
She told Swimming World:
“I chose James Madison University because it was the best fit for me academically as well as athletically. The girls in the team are a family and I’m so excited to join them in the fall of 2020! Go Dukes!”
Her best times include:
- 100 back – 54.28
- 200 back – 1:58.17
- 100 fly – 55.97
- 200 IM – 2:02.09
Even with well over a year to go before arriving on campus, Gring will make an immediate impact when she suits up for the Dukes as a member of the class of 2024. Her best 100 back, 200 back and 200 IM times would’ve secured the runner-up spot at the 2019 CAA Championships where James Madison earned their second-straight conference title.

Madison Cottrell has also committed to JMU for 2020. She is a breaststroker and sprint freestyler from NOVA of Virginia Aquatics.
