Jacob Johnson Sets 200 Fly Record, Minnesota Sets Attendance Record in Wins over Army

Freshman Jacob Johnson reset Minnesota’s program record in the men’s 200 butterfly in his first home dual meet as the Golden Gophers swept Army.

The men’s team scored a 197-103 win over the Black Knights, while the women won by a 238-62 margin. Minnesota drew 1,058 fans to the Jean K. Freeman Aquatic Center, a program record for a home dual meet.

Johnson went 1:42.41 to win the 200 fly. He chipped .06 off the mark set at last year’s Big Ten Championships by Kaiser Neverman. Johnson also went 46.58 to win the 100 fly and led off the 400 free relay with a time of 44.81.

Johnson also swum on the Gophers’ winning 200 medley relay, with Davide Harabagiu, Neverman and Connor Groya. Their time of 1:25.84 edged Army by just .14 seconds.

In addition to Johnson, Minnesota’s distance depth helped lead the way. Joey Tepper and Bar Soloveychik went 1-2 in the 1,000 free and 500 free, then Soloveychik won the 200 free with Tepper third. Joe Rudd went 53.08 to edge 2023 NCAA qualifier Kohen Rankin in the 100 breaststroke, then claimed the 200 back. Neverman showed his sprinting ability by going 19.91 to win the 50 free ahead of Army’s Owen Harlow and Ben Vorthmann. Neverman won the 200 IM ahead of Ryan Slonac, the winner in the 200 back.

YuTong Wang and Drew Bennett went 1-2 in both diving events for the Gophers.

Army’s fab freshman Johnny Crush lowered his program record in the 100 back a week after setting it. He trimmed nearly a tenth, from 47.07 in the opener to 46.98. He also edged Neverman in the 100 free in 44.02, winning by .02 seconds.

Army capped the meet by wining the 400 free relay, the squad of Vorthmann, Harlow, Crush and Thomas Hadji. Hadji was second in the 200 free. Daniel Verdolaga was the runner-up in both butterfly events.

The women’s meet was more decisive, Minnesota winning all but one event. Katie McCarthy won the 1,000 free and 500 free, with Eliot Kennedy second in both. McCarthy finished second to Mina Kaljevic in the 200 free.

Morgan Thomas went 22.49 to edge teammate Livi Wanner in the 50 free, then won the 100 fly in 53.23, just .25 ahead of Claire Reinke. Wanner captured the 100 free ahead of Kaljevic, and Reinke had earlier won the 200 fly. Paula Rodriguez Rivero (100 back), Elise Jacobs (200 back), Grace Drabot (200 breast) and Indy Jongman (200 IM) added wins for Minnesota. The Gophers swept both diving events, Elna Widerstrom leading the way in 1-2-3 results.

Army’s lone win on the women’s side came from Catriona Gilmore, who went 1:02.04 to win the 100 breast. She was second in the 200 breast.
