Denver South’s Jack Ryan set a new State Record in 1-meter diving to highlight the competition. Quick times also came courtesy of Broomfield’s Harrison Lierz in the 100 backstroke and 200 IM.
Discovery Canyon finished in second place overall for the second year in a row. Meet Mobile [2019 CHSAA 4A Boys Swim & Dive Champion] notes Greely West High School taking the team title with 323 points over Discovery’s 307. However, according to Colorado Springs’ The Gazette, controversial DQs cost Discovery the meet.
After a come-from-behind 200 Medley Relay victory, the report says that senior Braden Whitmarsh and junior Tommy Rauchut hopped back in the pool to warm down, disqualifying them from the 200 and 50 freestyles, respectively, because they broke a meet rule.
“When all competitors in that event have completed a race and a competitor in that event enters/re-enters the water without the referee’s approval,” the rule states, “that competitor shall be disqualified from his/her next schedule event.”
“The rule is in black and white and for whatever reason the guys decided to jump in after the event was over, and did not have permission to do so, so the rule was upheld,” Discovery Coach Dave Burgess told The Gazette. “They jumped back into the water to cool down because that’s what they were accustomed to doing throughout the season. That’s how it worked at the conference meets, so why wouldn’t they? At the end of the day it’s on me to let them know that they needed to get approval at the state meet.”
Whitmarsh was the fifth seed in the 200 freestyle (potential 18 points) and Rauchut was seventh headed into the 50 finals (potential 16 points). While anything could have happened in the finals, at worst the men would have earned a collective 26 points. This would have given them a total of 333 points— enough for the state title.
Regardless, the team still achieved numerous fast swims in route to their runner up finish. A full recap of the meet is available below:
