Jack Laugher, Jennifer Abel Win at FINA Diving World Series
The penultimate leg of the 2019 FINA Diving World Series concluded on Sunday May 12 in Kazan, Russia, as Great Britain’s Jack Laugher and China’s Yang Hao topped the men’s individual events and Canada’s Jennifer Abel and DPR Korea’s Kim Mi Rae triumphed in the women’s springboard and platform events.
Laugher was the best in the 3m with 499.30 points, while Russia’s Evgenii Kuznetsov came second, accumulating 466.60 points and China’s Peng Jianfeng closed the podium with 464.95.
Hao excelled in the platform event, grabbing a total of 537.05 points for gold, in front of Russia’s Aleksandr Bondar (522.60), who settled for silver and Thomas Daley (GBR) for bronze with 520.40 points.
Yang was also the best in the synchro 10m event, together with partner Lian Junjie, as they clinched gold with 444.18, while Bondar also ranked second this time with Viktor Minibaev (403.02). Matthew Lee / Thomas Daley settled for bronze (395.82).
Ukraine’s pair Oleg Kolodiy / Oleksandr Gorshkovozov pocketed the synchro 3m gold at stake with 403.26, while neighbors Nikita Shleikher / Evgenii Kuznetsov (RUS, 401.94) took silver and South Americans Juan Manuel Celaya Hernandez / Yahel Ernesto Castillo Huerta (MEX, 400.53) took bronze.
In the women’s competition, Abel surprised everyone by stealing the 3m crown with 330.60 points. Behind her followed two Chinese divers: Lin Shan for silver (303.60) and Chang Yani (302.20) for bronze.
Kim Mi Rae was the best in the platform event with 373.40 points and was closely followed by Team China’s Zhang Minjie (364.60) and Chen Yuxi (356.95) in this order.
The Chinese ladies however claimed the golds on offer in both the synchronised events: Lin Shan / Chang Yani won the 3m in 302.01 and Yuan Haoyan / Chen Yuxi topped the 10m in 338.70.
Australia, Ukraine, DPR Korea and Russia were the other nations taking a medal in the women’s synchronized events.
In the mixed events, Australia showed top form in the 3m to clinch gold (318.12) thanks to Domonic Bedggood / Maddison Keeney‘s performance, while China’s pair Duan Yu / Zhang Minjie impressed the most (339.42) in the 10m competition.
The 2019 circuit of the FINA/CNSG Diving World Series next stops in London (GBR) on May 17-19 for the last meet of the year.
