Izzy Ivey Posts 47.5 100 Free, Wilson Swims 1:53 200 IM in Cal’s Win Over UCLA

The Cal Golden Bears women’s team continued its season opening weekend with a win over conference foe UCLA on Saturday afternoon in Berkeley. The Golden Bears, who have finished second place at the last three NCAA championships, beat the Bruins 133-53 thanks to some quick times posted by the Cal team.

Junior Izzy Ivey posted a 47.53 in the 100 freestyle which is the second quickest time in Division I this season behind Virginia’s Kate Douglass (46.86) as Ivey won ahead of Danish freshman Emily Gantriis (48.68). Ivey also finished second to Alicia Wilson in the 200 IM with Wilson swimming a 1:53.58 that also puts her second nationally behind Douglass (1:50.92) as it is a best time for Wilson who was a 1:54.6 last season. Ivey was second at 1:55.08.

Ivey also anchored the 200 free relay with a 21.58 as the Golden Bears swam a 1:27.57 to put themselves third nationally behind NC State (1:27.00) and Virginia (1:27.37). Eloise Riley (22.22), Gantriis (21.82) and Elise Garcia (21.95) led the way for Ivey to close over UCLA’s 1:30.06.

The Bears also had a strong showing in the medley relay with a 3:32.40 with Isabelle Stadden (51.24), Alicia Harrison (1:01.03), Garcia (52.50) and Gantriis (47.63), finishing just ahead of B relay Ayla Spitz (53.60), Ema Rajic (59.06), Rachel Klinker (51.62) and Robin Neumann (48.82), showcasing the Bears depth for this season.

Klinker won the 200 butterfly with a 1:53.51 which put her fifth nationally thus far this season with Texas’ Olivia Bray leading the national rankings at 1:52.85. Rajic improved on her school record in the 100 breaststroke at 58.91 which moved her up to fourth nationally in the event.

Freshman Stadden won the 200 back with a 1:51.17 ahead of Wilson (1:53.96) as she has already been a 1:49 this season.

Spitz won the 500 free at 4:39.86 which puts her eighth nationally.
