Iza Adame, Andy Dobrzanski Help Arizona State Sweep Minnesota

Arizona State’s Iza Adame and Andy Dobrzanski each swept the breaststroke events to go with a medley relay win as Arizona State handled Minnesota in a cross-conference clash Friday.

The women’s team won 191-109. The men improved to 8-0 with a 206-94 decision in Tempe.

Adame went 1:00.22 to win the 100 breast, then 2:12.40 to edge teammate Emma Gehlert by .15 seconds in the 200. Adame teamed with Miriam Sheehan, Julia Ullmann and Caroline Bentz to win the 200 medley relay in 1:36.40.

Dobrzanski was tops in the 100 breast with a time of 52.75 seconds. His 1:54.69 in the 200 prevailed by nearly 3.5 seconds. He split 23.63 to team with Lucien Vergnes, Ilya Kharun and Jonny Kulow in the 200 medley relay, which went 1:22.71.

Adame was one of three double winners on the women’s side. Sonia Vaishnani went 1:59.03 in the 200 fly, edging Ullmann by .04 seconds. She won another tight race in the 200 individual medley, her 2:01.24 just .12 seconds up on teammate Charli Brown.

Bentz went 22.23 to dominate the 50 free and 1:54.61 in the 200 back, Brown again second. Bentz led off the winning 400 free relay in 48.88, handing off to Ullmann, who had won the 100 fly. The other member of the leading relay, Sheehan, won the 100 back. Erin Milligan won the 100 free and anchored the victorious 400 free relay quartet.

The Sun Devils men’s team was just as dominant, with Kharun sweeping the fly events. He went 1:40.13 in the 200 fly and 44.73 in the 100 fly. Kharun’s fly split in the medley relay was 19.08. He anchored ASU’s A 400 free relay in 40.85, faster than the 40.87 of Kulow on the B squad, though that B squad won by .04 seconds in 2:48.46. Tolu Young, Tiago Behar and Patrick Sammon were the rest of that squad.

Kulow won the 100 free (42.38) and was second to Tommy Palmer (19.19) in the 50 free. Jono Adam swept the backstroke events, besting Vergnes in the 100.

Minnesota’s wins clustered in the distance events and diving. Bar Soloveychik led the way with a sweep of the 500 free and 1,000, with Joey Tepper third in both. Drew Bennett won 1-meter diving and finished second to teammate YuTong Wang on 3-meter. Jacob Johnson was second to Kharun in the 200 fly and third in the 100 fly.

On the women’s side, Elliot Kennedy won the 1,000 freestyle and was second to Arizona State’s Alexa Reyna in the 500 free. Anja Kaljevic followed Kennedy with a win in the 200 free head of Milligan and Brown. Vivi Del Angel Peniche and Elna Widerstrom went 1-2 in both women’s diving events.
