ISL Match Two, Day Two: London Roar Pull Away Behind Adam Peaty, Duncan Scott; Ranomi Kromowidjojo Wins MVP

The London Roar surged to a convincing lead at the end of the first day of their opening match in the International Swimming League (ISL) in Budapest on Sunday.

The Roar come into Day 2 with 294 points, ahead of the Aqua Centurions (197), Team Iron (194) and DC Trident (181).

Out of the 20 events on Day 1, 10 were first-time ISL winners.

On the second day, Team Iron’s big names, Ranomi Kromowidjojo won the 100 free to open the competition and Katinka Hosszu won the 200 fly.

But several 1-2 and 1-3 finishes for the London Roar, led by victories from Adam Peaty, Duncan Scott, Vini Lanza, Kira Toussaint, Guilherme Guido, Alia Atkinson and Marie Wattel continued to build the lead and made the race for second.

Women’s 100 Free

Ranomi Kromowidjojo of Team Iron won the 100 free to start the second day of competition in 52.00.

Anna Hopkin of the London Roar was second (52.42), followed by teammate Marie Wattel (52.64).

DC Trident’s Margo Geer was fourth (53.40).

“I am feeling amazing. It is just the first official race in months, but I really love facing. I am looking forward to the next couple of weeks,” Kromowidjojo said on the broadcast.

Men’s 100 Free

DC Trident’s Zach Apple won the 100 free in 45.7, the only swimmer int he field to break 46 seconds in the event.

Aqua Centurions’ Alessandro Miressi finished second (46.03) followed by teammate Szebasztian Szabo (46.63).

London Roar’s Duncan Scott finished fourth (46.66).

“It feels awesome. Last night, I had a couple of good relay splits so I thought I could come in today and have a pretty good performance,” Apple said.

Women’s 200 Butterfly

Katinka Hosszu of Team Iron won the 200 butterfly at 2:07.04.

Bethany Galat of DC Trident finished second.

Emily Large of the London Roar was third.

“It feels good to win for the team. I think I am getting my groove back soon,” Hosszu said.

Men’s 200 Butterfly

The London Roar scored another big event, going 1-3 in the men’s 200 butterfly.

Vini Lanza won the event (1:51.75) and Andreas Vazaios was third (1:52.85) for the London Roar.

Leonardo DeDeus of the Aqua Centurions was second (1:52.80).

Women’s 100 Backstroke

London Roar’s Kira Toussaint won the 100 back in 56.24, so fast that it stole the points of the bottom three competitors of the event.

Teammate Kathleen Dawson was second, giving the Roar 26 points in the event after the jackpot times.

DC Trident’s Amy Bilquist, who won the 200 backstroke on Day 1, finished third.

Men’s 100 Backstroke

The London Roar men followed suit with some big points in the backstroke, going 1-3.

Guilherme Guido won the event, while teammate Christian Diener was third, stealing three points from the bottom two competitors because of the jackpot time.

Team Iron’s Guilherme Basseto finished second.

“That was really nice,” Guido said.

The team scores changed to :

Women’s 100 IM

Another event, another 1-2 finish for the Roar as Maria Kameneva won the 100 IM (58.86), going 1-2 with Alia Atkinson.

Iron’s Jenna Laukkanen took third and teammate Katina Hozzsu was fourth.

The DC Trident scored seven points behind Bailey Andison and Miranda Tucker and have 237 points, just two behind the Aqua Centurions (239) for third place.

Men’s 100 IM

Team Iron’s Marco Orsi won the 100 IM in 51.69.

Andreas Vaziaos of the London Roar was second, while Aqua Centurions’ Philip Heintz was third.

Women’s 200 Free

With Federica Pellegrini out for the time after testing positive for COVID-19 and Katie Ledecky and Ariarne Titmus not competing in the ISL season — and Siobhan Haughey in the opening meet — the 200 free was an intriguing and wide open race on Monday.

London Roar’s Marie Wattel continued her strong meet, winning the 200 free in 1:54.65.

Team Iron’s Veronika Andrusenko took second and Aqua Centurions’ Valentine Dumont was third.

Men’s 200 Free

London Roar’s Duncan Scott won the 200 free in 1:42.74 to earn his first ISL victory.

Scott held off a late charge from DC Trident’s Zach Apple, who finished second.

Aqua Centurions’ Breno Correia finished third.

Women’s 50 Butterfly

Team Iron’s Ranomi Kromowidjojo earned her second victory of the day, crushing the field in the 50 butterfly.

Her 24.74 time broke the ISL record set by Beryl Gastaldello earlier in the weekend. It was so fast that it hit a jackpot time that stole the points of a stunning five of her competitors.

Only the second and third places survived with their points as Team Iron teammate Melanie Henique was second, followed by DC Trident’s Linnea Mack.

Team Iron scored major points and Mack’s performance helped the DC Trident jump the Centurions:

Men’s 50 Butterfly

The Aqua Centurions got a much-needed win in the 50 fly as Szebasztian Szabo won the event in 22.00.

Team Iron’s Nicholas Santos finished second, followed by London Roar’s Marius Kusch.

Szabo’s time hit a jackpot that stole the points of the bottom four competitors in the event.

The jackpot shook up the team scores again as the Centurions scored 24 points in the event and the Trident were shut out:

Women’s 100 Breaststroke

London Roar’s Alia Atkinson claimed the 100 breaststroke title in 1:04.21, another big win for the Roar.

Aqua Centurions teammates Martina Carraro and Arianna Castiglioni went 2-3 for some big points.

DC Trident’s Lindsey Kozelsky made a move early and was second at one point, but finished fourth.

Men’s 100 Breaststroke

After Adam Peaty of the London Roar was overtaken in the 50 and 200 breaststrokes, touched the wall first in the 100 breaststroke in yet another win for the Roar.

Peaty’s time was 56.38.

Nicolo Martinenghi of the Aqua Centurions was second, followed by Team Iron’s Emre Sakci, who made a late charge.

“It was hard coming in against world-class guys, especially short course guys. Since I haven’t raced since February, those race skills have just dropped back a bit, but I am happy with that,” Peaty said.

Mixed 4×100 Free Relay

DC Trident won the mixed free relay behind Zach Apple, Robert Howard, Margo Geer and Ky-lee Perry won in 3:18.82.

Apple had a great split to lead off and a Perry anchored with a 53.1, holding off late charges by the London Roar and Aqua Centurions to earn a much-needed victory for the Trident.

Women’s 400 IM

Team Iron’s Katinka Hosszu earned her second win of the day, touching the wall in 4:30.52 to win the 400 IM.

She held off DC Trident’s Bailey Andison, as well as a late charge from London Roar’s Aimee Willmott.

“I am very happy with the win. Not my best time, but it is my third event of the night,” Hosszu said. “I can’t wait for the skins.”

Men’s 400 IM

Following Hosszu’s performance, Team Iron went 1-2 in the men’s 400 IM. David Verraszto won the event in 4:04.25.

Teammate Leonardo Santos finished second, holding off DC Trident’s Abrahm DeVine.
