Illinois State Champion Megan Armstrong Verbally Commits to South Carolina for 2020
NEW COMMIT: St. Charles, Ill. native and current high school junior Megan Armstrong has selected the University of South Carolina and will arrive on campus as a member of the class of 2024.
Armstrong, who does her club swimming with St. Charles Swim Team, owns the U.S. Open cut in the 100 back with the Summer Juniors standard in the 200 back. She most recently competed at the Illinois Senior Championships where she won the 100 back and took second in the 200 back. At Juniors West, she recorded a best time and raced both backstroke events at Junior Nationals this past summer.
Also competing for St. Charles North High School, Armstrong is a four-time Illinois State Championship finalist. The NISCA and USA Swimming Scholastic All-American won the 100 back as a junior after placing seventh in that event as well as 12th in the 200 free during her sophomore season.
She told Swimming World:
“I am excited to announce my verbal commitment to the University of South Carolina. I want to thank my coaches, family and friends for their support. I look forward to being part of the Gamecock Family! Spurs Up!”
Her best times include:
- 50 back – 25.59
- 100 back – 54.40
- 200 back – 1:59.69
- 200 IM – 2:07.51
When she suits up for South Carolina at the start of the 2020-21 season, Armstrong will add valuable depth to their backstroke training group as her best times already rank near the top of their lineup.
The Gamecocks have been on top of their recruiting game for next fall, snagging three in-state recruits in Emma Sullivan, Gabi Reed and Riley Parker who will join Armstrong next fall, in addition to Meredith Berglund and Kaitlyn Porter.
