Hunter Armstrong, Josie Panitz Lead Ohio State Dominance of Big Ten Weekly Honors

Hunter Armstrong and Josie Panitz of the Ohio State University were named the Big Ten Weekly Honors Men’s and Women’s Swimmers of the Week on Wednesday.

Ohio State swept the men’s awards, with Jacob Fielding winning Diver of the Week and Alex Quach claiming Freshman of the Week. Indiana diver Tarrin Gilliland and Wisconsin freshman Mackenzie McConagha were also recognized.

Armstrong was a big reason for Ohio State winning the Tim Welsh Classic hosted by Notre Dame. The American Olympian won the men’s 100 backstroke (47.05) and 100 freestyle (43.12). He also helped the Buckeyes win all three freestyle relays in his first career swimmer of the week honor.

Fielding won both diving events at the Tim Welsh Classic, scoring 373.20 points on 1-meter and 426.35 on 3-meter. The senior is a five-time Diver of the Week.

Quach joined Armstrong on all three victorious relays. He also won the 100 butterfly (46.02) and 200 fly (1:44.61) to pace the Buckeyes to the Welsh Classic victory. The native of Australia wins the Freshman of the Week award for a third time this season.

Ohio State struggled as a team at the Welsh Classic, but not Panitz. The junior orchestrated a breaststroke sweep, going 1:01.16 to claim the 100 and 200 (2:14.43) for her first Swimmer of the Week nod.

Gilliland helped Indiana subdue cross-state rival Purdue in a dual meet for her first weekly honor. The sophomore won 1-meter with a score of 316.58 and claimed the platform with a tally of 304.58. She makes it two straight Big Ten weekly honors for Hoosiers divers, with Kristen Hayden earned the spot last week.

McConagha helped the Badgers dismiss Northwester on the weekend. She won the 100 fly (53.48) and 100 fly (1:57.85), both in NCAA provisional cuts. She also helped Wisconsin win the 400 freestyle relay.
