Hunter Armstrong Follows Brother to West Virginia With Verbal
NEW COMMIT: Dover, Ohio native Hunter Armstrong has announced his verbal intention to swim and study at West Virginia University beginning in the fall of 2019. His older brother, Jake Armstrong, is a current Mountaineer senior and reigning Big 12 champion in the 100 breast.
Armstrong swims year-round with Canton City Schools where he is a Junior National qualifier and recorded a best time in the 100m free at the meet this summer. He had a pair of top-5 finishes at Spire Speedo Sectionals and recorded 100% lifetime bests at Columbus TYR Pro Swim Series.
Armstrong also competes for Dover High School where he is a three-time Ohio State Championship finalist. He placed 13th in both the 100 free and 100 back at State during his junior season after placing eighth in the latter as a sophomore.
He told Swimming World:
“I am beyond excited to announce that in the Fall of 2019, I will be swimming for West Virginia University! Between the beautiful campus and atmosphere, the amazing coaching staff and teammates who made me feel a part of their family immediately, and WVU’s outstanding academic program, it was an easy decision to become a Mountaineer! There’s no doubt in my mind that Coach Riggs and his amazing staff will provide me with everything that I need to reach my full potential as a student, as an athlete, and as a Mountaineer! Let’s Go…….Mountaineers!”
His best times include:
- 50 free – 21.28
- 100 free – 47.81
- 100 back – 51.32
Armstrong will make an immediate impact when he suits up for the Mountaineers at the start of the 2019-20 season and will join a sprint group that includes Ryan Kelly, Matthew Marsh and Samuel Neaveill. Under head coach Vic Riggs, West Virginia finished second at the 2018 Big 12 Championships.
