Hugo Gonzalez And Maria De Valdes Among Five Selected By Spain For Paris 2024; Final Team Announced After Olympic Trials In June
Hugo Gonzalez and Maria De Valdes are among five swimmers to have been named to the Spain team for Paris 2024.
Gonzalez won the 200m backstroke at last month’s World Championships after being edged out by Hunter Armstrong and 0.02 over 100m.
The 25-year-old has been selected for both the 100 and 200 back plus the 200IM in which he won the European title at the 2021 European Championships in Budapest.
De Valdes has been selected for the Olympic marathon swimming which will take place in the River Seine.
The open water specialist came second in Doha to clinch qualification for Paris and claim her maiden global medal following European 5k silver at Rome 2022.
Joining her in the open water will be Ángela Martinez Guillen, who was 13th at Old Doha Port.
Also selected are Mario Molla Yanes in the men’s 100 fly after finishing seventh last month and Carlos Garach Benito who was 15th in the 800 free prelims.
Also qualified are the men’s 4×100 free, 4×200 free and 4x100m medley relay plus the women’s 4×2.
The quintet will also be considered for selection for the 2024 European Championships in Belgrade, Serbia, with the pool programme running from 17-23 June.
The full Spanish team will be announced following the Absolute Spanish Championship Open Trials Paris 2024 in Palma de Mallorca, 18-22 June.
