How They Train YOTA Standout and North Carolina Recruit Reese Stoner
Reese Stoner is Chapel Hill-bound come fall to swim for the University of North Carolina. Primarily a backstroker and IMer, the six-foot, 160-pound senior at Millbrook High in Raleigh is the Tar Heel State’s 23rd-ranked male (279th nationally) in Swimcloud’s Class of 2023.
Currently, he possesses one USA Swimming Winter U.S. Open time in the 200-meter back (2:05.33), five long course Futures and one Winter and Summer Junior cut. At the 2022 North Carolina 4A High School State Championships, he helped his Millbrook squad to a fifth-place team finish. Individually, he notched a fourth in the 100-yard back (50.94), sixth in the 200 IM (1:54.19) and clocked a 27.15 breaststroke leg on the fifth-place Wildcat medley relay (1:34.90). At the 2022 YMCA Short Course National Championships, Stoner recorded personal bests in the 50-100-200 back and 200-400 IM.
“I have coached Reese for the past three years,” says his coach, Jamie Bloom. “He is highly academically motivated and is part of the IB (International Baccalaureate) program at Millbrook. He has done a pretty good job of balancing the demands of IB along with a very demanding swim practice schedule.
“Reese has gotten better at getting more rest/sleep and continues to work on being as prepared for productive and effective training sessions. His progression has been impressive, as he has grown emotionally and physically, learning to train and compete.
“Very focused in practice, he usually has a point of emphasis for the session, working hard to accomplish it. For instance, he has been working very intentionally on underwater kick counts, especially for his backstroke,” says Bloom.
A leader among his peers, Stoner was chosen as an athlete representative and is a member of the YMCA Swim Officials Committee for 2022-23.
