Hosts & Dates Of European Championships Yet To Be Finalised As LEN Announces 2024 Events Calendar

European governing body LEN has announced the preliminary 2024 events calendar with the hosts and dates of the European Championships yet to be finalised.

The 2024 continental showpiece had been scheduled to take place in Kazan but following the Russian invasion of Ukraine it was announced that LEN-sanctioned events would not be held in either Russia or Belarus.

Neither would athletes from those countries be allowed to compete at LEN events “until further notice.”

Rome hosted the last Europeans at the iconic Foro Italico in August 2022, 15 months after Budapest staged the 2020 edition which was delayed until May 2021 because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

From 1973 to 1999 the Europeans were held in years without an Olympics or World Championships but since 2000 every second edition takes place in Olympic year.

All have been staged in the months before the Games but Doha’s hosting of the worlds in February 2024 brings an added complication.

LEN said in a press release:

“Discussions with potential hosts of the 2024 edition of LEN European Aquatics Championships are reaching their final phase, with the announcement of dates and venues expected very soon.”

The European Junior Swimming Championships will be held in Vilnius, Lithuania, from 2-7 July while Eilat, Israel hosts the European Junior Open Water Swimming Championships (26-28 September).

Eilat also stages the first of five legs of the LEN Open Water Swimming Cup (March 16) followed by Piombino, Italy, who host leg two (18 May) with a date and location for leg three set to be announced shortly.

Belgrade, Serbia (15 June) and Ohrid, Macedonia (8 September) hosts legs four and five with the date for the sixth event in Barcelona to be confirmed.

The LEN European Water Polo Championships will take place from 3-16 January in Netanya, Israel with the draw going ahead on 12 September.
