Hoosiers Secure Class of 2025 In-State Verbal from IMer Lucas Piunti
NEW COMMIT: Valparaiso, Ind. native Lucas Piunti has elected to stay in state for his college career, handing his verbal commitment to Indiana University beginning in the fall of 2021.
The owner of two U.S. Open cuts, Piunti swims year-round with Duneland Swim Club and most recently placed 12th in the 400m IM this past summer at Junior Nationals. Last winter, he earned bronze in the 400 IM with three additional top-10 finishes at Indiana Seniors.
A current junior at Chesterton High School, Piunti is already a four-time Indiana State Championship finalist. The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American placed fourth in the 200 IM and sixth in the 100 back as a sophomore while he finished 14th and 16th, respectively, in those events during his freshman season.
He told Swimming World:
“I’m extremely excited and proud to announce that I will be continuing my academic and swimming career at Indiana University! I am beyond thankful to be a member of such an amazing team of swimmers and coaches that will continuously push me day in and day out. I would like to give a special thanks to all of my friends, family, and coaches for helping me through the entire process. GO HOOSIERS!!!”
His best times include:
- 200 IM – 1:49.69
- 400 IM – 3:54.75
- 100 back – 50.10
- 200 back – 1:51.04
Piunti has seen some steady time drops over the past two seasons, knocking off four seconds in the 100 back, six seconds in both the 200 IM and 200 back, and seven in the 400 IM. With just under two years of club swimming still to go before joining the Hoosiers as a member of the class of 2025, he’ll surely continue to improve and will join breaststroker Henry Bethel in Bloomington in the fall of 2021.
