Hokies Snag 2021 Verbal Commitment from Ben Eckerson of Eastern Express Swim Team
NEW COMMIT: Virginia Tech has scored their first verbal commitment for the Hokies’ class of 2025 from Pennington, N.J. native Ben Eckerson.
Regarding his commitment, he said:
“I chose Virginia Tech because of the great environment and amazing coaching staff along with the phenomenal education that is offered there. I am very excited for the next chapter of my swimming journey to begin! Go Hokies!”
A talented backstroker, Eckerson does his club swimming with Eastern Express Swim Team and owns the Junior National cut in the 100 back. He finished 15th in the 100 back at Juniors East in December and earned 100% best times at Ithaca Sectionals last short course season. He also had a strong showing at Geneva Futures in August.
His best times include:
- 50 back – 23.30
- 100 back – 48.78
- 200 back – 1:51.66
- 50 free – 21.00
Also competing for the Pennington School, Eckerson is a five-time Eastern Interscholastic Championship finalist. The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American won the 100 back and placed ninth in the 50 free as a junior while taking 14th and 20th, respectively, in those events during his sophomore season.
The Hokies finished fourth overall in the team standings at the 2020 ACC Championships under head coach Sergio Lopez.
