Hokies Earn In-State Verbal From Nation’s Capital’s Sarah Shackelford
NEW COMMIT: Burke, Va. native Sarah Shackelford has elected to stay in-state and swim for the Virginia Tech Hokies as a member of the class of 2023.
Shackelford does her club swimming with Nation’s Capital Swim Club and owns a trio of Winter Junior standards. She most recently competed at NCSAs this summer where she finaled in two events after posting a pair of lifetime bests at Potomac Valley Senior Championships. She raced three events at NCSAs in March and recorded a best time in all of them.
Shackelford also swims for Lake Braddock High School where she is a four-time Virginia 6A State Championship finalist. She finished fourth in the 100 free and sixth in the 50 free at State during her junior season after placing 13th in both the 50 free and 100 back as a freshman.
She told Swimming World:
“So beyond blessed and thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to Swim for Virginia Tech!! I believe VT has exactly what I need to grow and improve both academically and athletically. Head coach Sergio Lopez, Josh Huger, Jacy Dyer and the rest of the coaching staff were overwhelmingly supportive throughout this process and truly care for their swimmers not only as athletes, but as people. So ready to represent VT alongside a group of incredible teammates!! GO HOKIES!!!”
Her best times include:
- 50 free – 23.35
- 100 free – 51.73
- 100 back – 58.03
- 200 back – 2:05.37
Shackelford will join Jenna Thompson, Sophia Ryan, Hannah Jirsa, Brooke Travis, Hannah Virgin, Morgan Miller, Ashley Worden, Shelby Raber and Rose Pouch in the fall of 2019. The Hokies finished seventh in the team standings at the 2018 ACC Championships.
