Hokies Add Maryland State Champ Sophia Ryan to Class of 2023
NEW COMMIT: Virginia Tech has been rolling in the commitments and recently added another one from Sophia Ryan of Sandy Spring, Md.
Ryan will join Hannah Jirsa, Brooke Travis, Hannah Virgin, Morgan Miller, Ashley Worden, Shelby Raber and Rose Pouch as members of the Hokie class of 2023.
Ryan does her club swimming with Rockville Montgomery Swim Club and has met the Winter Junior standard in the 200 back. She concluded her summer season with three best times and a finals appearance at NCSA Championships. She also had a strong showing in her four events she raced at NCSAs in March.
Also representing Sherwood High School, Ryan is a six-time MPSSAA 4A/3A State finalist. She won the 200 free and was the 100 back runner-up at the state meet as a junior. She posted a pair of bronze-medal finishes in those same events during her sophomore season.
She told Swimming World:
“Thrilled to announce my commitment to swim and study at Virginia Tech!! I can’t wait to be a part of an amazing team and school. Thanks to my family, friends, and coaches for all the support. It’s a great day to be a Hokie!! #gokies”
Her best times include:
- 100 back – 56.29
- 200 back – 2:00.19
- 100 free – 53.02
- 200 free – 1:51.46
- 500 free – 4:58.37
- 1000 free – 10:19.45
Ryan, who has consistently dropped time each season, will join a talented backstroke group that includes Reka Gyorgy and Emily Meilus when she suits up for the Hokies at the start of the 2019-20 season. Virginia Tech finished third in the team standings at the 2018 ACC Championships.
