Halle West, Canadian National Age Group Record Hold, Picks Cal For 2026

NEW COMMIT: The University of California, Berkeley, has received a new verbal commitment for Fall 2026 from Halle West of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.

Her older siser, Mia West, is currently a freshman on Cal’s roster. Their mother, Riley Mants West, competed for Canada at the 1996 Olympic Games.

She will join Kelsey Zhang, Ava de Anda and Isabel Wolk as a member of the Golden Bears’ Class of 2030.

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“After very careful consideration I am absolutely thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to continue my athletic and academic career at the University of California, Berkeley! I want to thank my family, friends, teammates, teachers, coach Szilvie, and previous coaches for their endless help and support. I also want to give a special thank you to the coaches at Cal for their guidance and giving me this incredible opportunity. I can’t wait to be a part of such an amazing team and to see what the future has in store… GO BEARS!!!!”

West represents Canada internationally. She placed seventh in the 100m breast and 11th in the 200m IM this past summer at Junior Pan Pac Championships. Last fall, she finished ninth in the 50m breast at the World Junior Championships.

In January 2023, West clocked in a time of 1:08.09 to win the 100 breast (SCM) at the 2023 New Year’s Invitational. That broke a 35-year-old Canadian National Age Group Record by 0.79.

Her best times include:

  • 50m breast – 31.38
  • 100m breast – 1:09.88
  • 200m breast – 2:33.41
  • 200m IM – 2:15.99
  • 50m free – 26.58
  • 100m free – 56.32
  • 200m free – 2:02.21

In LCM, her best times convert to:

  • 50 breast – 27.36
  • 100 breast -1:01.15
  • 200 breast – 2:14.60
  • 200 IM – 1:59.63
  • 50 free – 23.22
  • 100 free – 49.29
  • 200 free – 1:47.21

West trains year-round with Manta Swim Club.

2024-25 marks Cal’s first year competing in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Golden Bears won the 2024 Pac-12 title.
