Guy Wins 50 Fly; Wilby Stuns in 200 Breast at British Championships

James Guy won his second championship of the EISM Inc British Championships on Friday, but it was a different, more surprising race that highlighted night two of the championships.

Loughborough National Centre swimmer James Wilby beat reigning champion Ross Murdoch in the 200 breast on day two at the Royal Commonwealth Pool in Edinburgh.

Wilby finished in 2:12.02 well ahead of Murdoch (2:14.22) and the rest of the field.

Guy won the 50 butterfly in 24.24, but couldn’t complete a golden daily double.

In the men’s 400 free Jay Lelliott (3:50.85) from the City of Sheffield, beat Guy (3:51.40), the British record holder.

In the women’s 100 breast Chloe Tutton took the title (1:08.02 … though Spain’s Jessica Vall finished in 1:07.21, but is not British). Hollie Hibbot won the 800 free (8:39.98 … four second behind Spain’s Mireia Belmonte) and Lucy Hope (25.69) took her second gold of the meet, the women’s 50 free (though Spain’s Lidon Munoz finished in 25.65).

Siobhan-Marie O’Connor took on her first of two finals in a half hour, winning the women’s 200 IM (2:12.26) ahead of Loughborough University’s Abbie Wood (2:13.45).

And it was a repeat title for Chris Walker-Hebborn in the men’s 100 backstroke (55.26 … though behind Germany’s Jan-Philip Glania in 54.97) with Luke Greenback and Brodie Williams also earning podium places.

University of Edinburgh’s Lizzie Simmonds won the women’s 200 backstroke (2:10.26)with Kat Greenslade (2:20.62) winning silver — after Thursday’s gold in the 200 freestyle.
