Gretchen Walsh, Notre Dame Duo Garner ACC Weekly Honors

Virginia star Gretchen Walsh and a pair of Notre Dame athletes earned this week’s ACC Weekly Honors, announced on Tuesday.

Walsh was the women’s swimmer of the week. Chris Guiliano won the men’s award, and his Notre Dame teammate Carlo Lopez-Hernandez shared men’s diver of the week honors with Max Fowler of Georgia Tech. North Carolina’s Aranza Vazquez Montano picked up her second straight women’s diver of the week honor.

Guiliano won three events at the Ohio State Invitational. He set school records in the men’s 50 freestyle (18.84 seconds) and 100 free (41.40). He also won the 200 free in 1:32.14. The 100 free time is an NCAA A cut, and he also clocked in at 47.98 in the LCM 100 free. Guiliano helped the Irish set school marks in the 200 free, 400 free and 400 medley relay.

Walsh made even more history at the Tennessee Invitational. The American national teamer set the unofficial American, NCAA and U.S. Open record in the 100 fly at 48.30, then posted the second fastest 100 free relay split ever at 45.18. She matched the NCAA record and lowered her American record in the 50 free in 20.79 seconds. She also set the school record in the 200 free to win in 1:41.32.

Fowler won 3-meter diving at the Georgia Invitational, with a score of 390.80 points. He finished fifth on 1-meter with a score of 349.55.

Lopez-Hernandez set the Notre Dame program record by scoring 376.00 points on platform to win at Ohio State. The graduate student from Canada was third on both boards, scoring 341.55 on 1-meter and 377.65 on 3-meter.

Vazquez Montano took home both board titles from Knoxville. She scored 324.85 to win 1-meter and 356.80 on 3-meter. It’s the third time she’s swept springboard at a meet this season.
