Gregorio Paltrinieri, Simona Quadarella & Nicolo Martinenghi Among 36-Strong Italy Squad For Paris 2024

Gregorio Paltrinieri, Nicolo Martinenghi and Simona Quadarella are among a 36-strong Italy team set for Paris 2024, three years after they made the individual podium at the Olympic Aquatic Centre in Tokyo.

Paltrinieri clinched silver in the 800 free while Martinenghi and Quadarella won bronze in the men’s 100m breaststroke and women’s 800 free respectively and the trio will make the trip to the French capital ahead of the Games.

Federico Burdisso won bronze in the 200 fly in Tokyo but he misses out this year with Giacomo Carini making the trip after winning the 200 fly in 1:54.34 at the Sette Colli meet last weekend, a time just 0.06 off Burdisso’s national record.

Italy also won silver in the men’s 4×1 free and bronze in the men’s medley relay to leave Tokyo with six medals in the pool with Paltrinieri also claiming bronze in the 10k open water.

Five-time world medallist Benedetta Pilato is among 16 women selected with the 19-year-old set for her second Games, three years after being DQd in the 100m breaststroke.

She will be joined by fellow breaststroke specialist Lisa Angiolini although there’s no place for Martina Carraro who was seventh in Tokyo.

Thomas Ceccon, Alessandro Miressi and Alberto Razzetti are among 20 men selected to the team.

Paltrinieri and Ginevra Taddeucci will compete in both the pool and open water.

Three 17-year-olds will compete at the European Junior Championships in Lithuania next week before heading to Paris.

Sara Curtis set a European junior 50 free record and Italian standard of 24.56 at the Italian Championships in March and she will travel to Vilnius for the meet running from 2-7 July with Alessandro Ragaini and Carlos D’Ambrosio, the trio all 17.
