Grand Valley State Gets First 2021 Verbals from Kayley Gallagher, Samantha Weigel

NEW COMMITS: Grand Valley State University has splashed into their Class of 2025 recruiting after receiving a pair of verbal commitments from Fenton, Mich. native Kayley Gallagher and Samantha Weigel of Naperville, Ill.

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“I’m excited to announce my verbal commitment to Grand Valley State University!! I fell in love with GVSU because of the incredible academic and swimming programs. I could not be happier to continue swimming for such an amazing team. Go Lakers!! ?⚓”

Primarily a freestyler and breaststroker, Gallagher swims year-round with OLY Swimming and most recently achieved five lifetime bests at the MCSA Senior Cup in March. She also had a strong showing at the Michigan Open in February where she placed 15th in the mile and 23rd in the 200 breast.

Her best times include:

  • 1000 free – 10:43.33
  • 1650 free – 17:58.28
  • 100 breast – 1:08.055
  • 200 breast – 2:25.85

Last summer, she won the 200m breast at the OLY Grizzly Summer Invitational before going on to take 10th in the 800m free and 12th in the 200m breast at the Michigan LCM Open Championships.

SAMANTHA WEIGEL

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“I am super excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and swimming career at Grand Valley State University!! Thank you to all of my coaches, teammates, family and friends for supporting me through this process! Go Lakers!”

A strong freestyler and backstroker, Weigel trains year-round with Maverick Swim Club and placed 16th in the 500 free and 24th in the 200 back at Illinois Seniors in March. At Illinois LCM Seniors last summer, she recorded two best times in the 400m free and 200m back.

Her best times include:

  • 200 free – 1:54.31
  • 500 free – 5:03.37
  • 100 back – 59.74
  • 200 back – 2:05.43

Also competing for Naperville Central High School, Weigel raced the 200/500 free at the Illinois State Championships during both her sophomore and junior seasons.
