Grand Canyon Grabs First Verbal from Arizona 500 Free State Champion Ellis Bohon
NEW COMMIT: Grand Canyon University has received their first verbal commitment for the 2020-21 season from in-state freestyler Ellis Bohon of Scottsdale, Az.
Primarily a distance freestyler, Bohon does his club swimming with Swim Neptune and owns four Summer Juniors time standards. He capped off a stellar long course season by earning 100% best times at Arizona Senior Opens after winning the 1500m free and earning bronze in the 800m free at Mount Hood Sectionals. Last winter, he raced three events at Juniors West and took home a gold medal in the 1000 free at Phoenix Sectionals.
Also competing for Chaparral High School, Bohon is a six-time Arizona DII State Championship finalist and has earned USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors. He won the 500 free and finished sixth in the 200 IM as a junior after finishing second in the former event as well as sixth in the 200 free during his sophomore season.
He told Swimming World:
“I’m committing to Grand Canyon University because of the rising and already outstanding Division I swim team, the attractive environment and spirit, and the excellent opportunity to get a Masters Degree in history.”
His best times include:
- 200 free – 1:41.94
- 500 free – 4:29.07
- 1000 free – 9:16.03
- 1650 free – 15:33.78
- 400 IM – 3:56.93
Bohon will make an immediate impact when he suits up for the Lopes as a member of the class of 2024 as his best times already rank at the top of their lineup. Even with a year of club swimming still to go, he would’ve scored in the A-final of the 500 free, 400 IM and placed top-5 in the mile at the 2019 Western Athletic Conference Championships where Grand Canyon earned their first-ever team title.

Congratulations to Ellis! #lopesup
