Goodwill Games Set Aside $5 Million For Prizes

NEW YORK – Organizers of the 1998 Goodwill Games are confident a major change in their approach to rewarding athletes will ensure superior fields and performances. The Games will offer $5 million in prize money, a record for a multi-sport event. The Games, scheduled for New York July 19-Aug. 2 next year, are expected to draw approximately 1,300 athletes from more than 70 countries. Competition will be in 12 sports with much of the interest likely to revolve around figure skating, track and field, gymnastics, basketball and swimming.
