AUBURN, Alabama, October 5. Germantown Academy’s Shannon McKernan, the top-ranked recruit out of Pennsylvania according to Collegeswimming.com, has committed to swim for Auburn University next fall.
McKernan has posted some exceptional swims in the freestyle and backstroke events and should contribute points right away next fall. Her top times include a 1:46.93 in the 200 free, 49.93 in the 100 free, 23.39 in the 50 free, 56.59 in the 100 back and 2:02.28 in the 200 back.
McKernan’s personal best in the 200 free would have made the consolation final at last year’s SEC Championships, while her 50 and 100 free times would’ve been just outside the top 24 qualifiers at that meet.
McKernan was part of a national high school record-breaking 400 free relay at the 2013 Eastern Interscholastic Swimming and Diving Championships when she joined Germantown Academy teammates Meagan Dollard, Madison Visco and Rachel Zilinskas to post a 3:21.63 in the event, becoming the first high school girls relay to clear 3:22. That record has since been lowered. McKernan has won nearly a dozen individual Easterns titles and will be a huge pickup for the Tigers.
