Junior National Team member Aaron Apel will be making the journey cross country next fall from Scottsdale, Arizona to join the Bulldogs of the University of Georgia. Apel has an impressive club resume for a high school senior. He is both a two time Junior National Team Member and Scholastic All-America selection, a U.S. Olympic trials qualifier (400 and 1500 FR), the 2015 LC Juniors gold medalist in the 1500 and the silver medalist in the 2016 LC Juniors in the 800 and 1500.
Apel has also excelled in the high school pool, twice earning High School All-America honors in the 500 free. Swimming for Pinnacle High School he finished fourth in the 200 freestyle (1:40.89) and third in the 500 free (4:28.54) at the 2015 Arizona Division I High School State Championships.
Apel should have an immediate impact for the Bulldogs. His best time in 500 free would earn C Final points at the 2016 SEC Championships while his best 1650 would have finished just inside the top 16, with continued improvement likely as he joins a strong Georgia distance group led by Kevin Litherland, Aidan Burns, and Mick Litherland.
His best times are (SCY/LCM):
- 200 Free 1:40.27/1:53.26
- 500 Free 4:24.40/3:56.78
- 1000 Free 9:15.90/8:04.75
- 1650 Free 15:13.28/15:17.60
- 400 IM 3:59.88/4:41.62
