Distance swimmer Emmaline Peterson has announced her verbal commitment to the University of Georgia. Peterson, who swims for Hickory Foundation YMCA, joins Sammie Burchill in announcing her commitment to the Dawgs this week.
At YMCA Nationals this summer Peterson won the 800 (8:51.13) and 1500 (16:35.63) freestyles. She was also runner up in the 400 freestyle (4:19.39) and finished fourth in the 400 IM (4:57.08).
Last year while representing Hickory High School, Peterson took home the North Carolina High School 3A 500 freestyle (4:52.80) state title for the second year in a row. She was third in the 200 freestyle (1:52.93) for the second consecutive season. Peterson is also a USA Swimming Scholastic All-American.
Peterson’s best times are:
200/500/1000/1650 Freestyle: 1:49.67/ 4:46.43/ 9:47.64/ 16:11.79
400 IM: 4:20.37
At last year’s SEC meet Georgia finished third, but later won NCAAs. At the 2016 Conference meet, her best time in the mile would have finished fifth. Bulldawg senior Brittany MacLean won the event. Peterson would have been in the B final of the 500 freestyle. At NCAAs, Peterson’s best 1650 time would have placed 20th, just five seconds from scoring.
