PHILADELPHIA – St. Joseph’s Prep has named George Willard as its new swimming coach. Willard has many years of experience coaching in highly regarded swim programs, including the Jersey Wahoos where he was also a swimmer.
“I am excited to be able to bring a coach of this experience into our program,” says Prep Athletic Director Jim Murray. “Not only is he a well-established person in the swimming world but he is also an educator with an outstanding resume.”
Willard has been a swim coach for nearly 20 years. He spent several years with the Wahoos, where he was Head Age Group Coach and National Team Assistant Coach. Most recently he served as the head coach and manager of the Woodbine Swim Club and as the assistant coach/manager of the Pomona Swim Club, which won the Division Championship. As a swimmer, Willard was a USA Swimming Medalist/Finalist in 1995 and was USA Junior National Finalist in 1990. A graduate of Florida State University, he was a four-year letter winner and a conference finalist while serving as team captain. He was also named to the Atlantic Coast Conference honor roll and the dean’s list.
Willard also holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Teaching from the University of West Florida and has earned a Principal’s certification from Wilmington College in Delaware. A native of Willingboro, N.J., he has served as the Student Assistant Program Coordinator at Maple Shade High School where he has been since 2007, including two stints as Assistant Principal.
“Prep swimming has a tradition of building young men into leaders and great men and I plan to continue to build on what the program has done over the years and help keep it moving forward,” says Willard. “Swimming is my vehicle for teaching important life lessons and I look forward to working with the Prep students. Our goal is to be the best program in the area and we will work hard to accomplish that goal.”
