Genevieve Jorgenson Double Leads Nebraska to Win at Hawkeye Invitational

Nebraska’s Genevieve Jorgenson won two individual events and led off the Cornhuskers winning 800 free relay to lead them to a win at the Hawkeye Invitational last weekend.

The women’s only event hosted by the University of Iowa was won with 784 points, Nebraska edging out the hosts’ 712. Colorado State was third with 528, followed by Iowa State (518), Rutgers (363) and New Mexico state (348).

Jorgenson started the meet by winning Thursday’s 500 free in 4:43.87, nearly 4.5 seconds clear of the field. She finished third in the 400 individual medley on Friday but led off the 800 free relay in 1:48.69 to put the Huskers into clean water on the way to a decisive relay win. Jorgenson’s relay split was quicker than the 1:49.04 used by Iowa’s Jenna Kerr to win the individual event. Second on that relay was Giulia Marchi, who anchored the relay with Caterina Bisiacchi and Alexa Kucera.

Jorgenson won the mile on the final day of competition with a time of 16:15.82, more than 14 seconds clear of the field. Bisiacchi was third.

Nebraska’s Jojo Randby won the 100 breaststroke in 1:00.54, a 1-2 finish with Maia Hall. Randby was fourth in the 50 free, Hall second in the 200 breast. Sarah Barton won the 200 backstroke in 1:57.28, just outtouching Colorado State’s Tess Whineray. Barton was second in the 200 IM, fourth in the 400 IM and third in the 200 butterfly, won by teammate Anastasia Tichy in 1:58.87.

Iowa won four of five relays. The first was the only close one, the 200 free quartet of Kennedy Gilbertson, Jenna Kerr, Olivia Swalley and Scarlet Martin going 1:31.46 to edge Nebraska by .44 seconds. Those same four prevailed in the 400 medley and 20 medley, then Kerr, Swalley and Martin joined Sabina Kupcova to cap the meet by winning the 400 free relay in 3:20.47.

Swalley swept the IMs and won the 200 breast on the meet’s final day. She also took home third in the 100 breast. Gilbertson won the 50 free in 22.70 (with Martin third) and captured the 100 back in 54.13 (with teammate Hope Schimming third.)

Martin also finished third in the 100 fly and second in the 200 fly. Kerr was third in the 500 free and 200 free and fourth in the mile.

Rutgers got a win courtesy of Martyna Piesko, who bested the field in the 100 fly. She was second in the 100 back in the same session and fifth in the 200 back. Elysha Pribadi finished third in the 200 IM and third in the 200 breast.

Lexie Trietley won the 100 free for Colorado State in 49.76. She was second in the 50 free. Erin Dawson placed second in the 400 IM, and Maya White was the runner-up in the mile.

New Mexico State’s Naomi Slee was the runner-up in the 500. Teammate Lindsay Puhalski finished third in the 200 back.

Iowa State’s Lauren Kimball won both springboard diving events. Her teammate Kate Mitchell took the platform win.
