NEW COMMIT: Sylvania, Ohio native Sammie Young has announced her commitment to Gannon University beginning this fall. She will also be a member of their water polo team.

Young swims year-round with Toledo/Eastern Community YMCA and is a four-year Varsity swimmer for Sylvania Northview High School under head coach Melissa Burke. She most recently recorded a lifetime best at the Northwest Ohio Classic last month and placed tenth in the 100 fly at Northwest Ohio Districts last season. Young achieved a pair of personal bests at the 2017 John Bruce Memorial Meet and finished fifth in the 100 fly at the Northwest Ohio Aquatic Conference Championships during her sophomore season.

She told Swimming World:

“My dream for the past 10 years has been to swim for a collegiate team. It is true that hard work, dedication and sometimes sacrifice pays off. I am so excited to be a Golden Knight. I am looking forward to swimming and playing water polo for them. I can’t thank my coaches and family enough for their love and support.”

Her best times include:

  • 50 free – 27.29
  • 100 free – 57.54
  • 100 fly – 1:06.01

When she suits up for the Golden Knights as a member of the class of 2023, Young will add her talents to a sprint training group that’ll include Zoe SnyderCassidy Burns and Silvija Taraska. Under head coach Darren Suroviec, Gannon finished sixth overall in the team standings at the 2018 PSAC Championships.
