Futures Gold Medalist Ava Sutphin Gives Arizona First 2023 Verbal Commitment

NEW COMMIT: Junior National qualifier Ava Sutphin of Cincinnati, Ohio, has handed the University of Arizona its first verbal commitment for the fall of 2023.

She told Swimming World:

“I am SO excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at the University of Arizona!! I would like to thank my family, friends, teammates, and coaches for their constant support and encouragement throughout this journey. I would also like to thank the Arizona swim team and staff for creating such a welcoming environment and an amazing team atmosphere. I am so grateful for this opportunity and I can’t wait to be a part of the wildcat family!! #beardown”
A talented distance freestyler, Sutphin does her club swimming with the ME Lyons YMCA/Anderson Barracuda and most recently earned four best times at the Speedo Winter East Championships where she placed 11th in the mile. This past summer, she won the 1500m free at Richmond Futures where she also placed eighth in the 800m free.

Her best times include:

  • 500 free – 4:56.16
  • 1000 free – 10:09.38
  • 1650 free – 16:45.72

Currently a junior at Turpin High School, Sutphin raced to sixth in the 500 free at the 2021 Ohio State Championships. She placed 11th in that event as well as 16th in the 200 free during her freshman season.
