NEW COMMIT: Virginia Tech has scored a new in-state verbal commitment for the 2022-23 season and beyond from Emily Claesson of Virginia Beach, Va. Her older brother, Henry Claesson, is currently a junior for the Hokies.

She will arrive in Blacksburg as a member of the Hokies’ Class of 2026 along with Caroline Foltz, Isabel Marstellar and Carmen Weiler.

Regarding her commitment, she said:

“I am so excited to announce my verbal commitment to Virginia Tech to continue to swim and study. Thank you to all of my friends, coaches, teammates from both Virginia and Illinois and my family for offering endless support for me throughout my journey. Go Hokies!! ?♥️? #talonsup #gokies”

Formerly competing for Lyons Swim Club, Claesson sprinted to 10th place in the 50 free at Illinois Seniors back in March. In Summer 2019, she took seventh in both the 50m and 100m free at Illinois LCM Seniors before going on to take 20th and 23rd, respectively, in those events at Des Moines Futures.

She currently competes for Tide Swim Team.

  • 200 free – 1:51.08
  • 100 fly – 57.19
  • 200 IM – 2:08.60

Her family recently moved to Virginia from La Grange, Ill., where she competed Lyons Township High School. She finished sixth in the 50 free and 11th in the 100 free as a sophomore at the Illinois State Championships after winning those events at the IHSA Sectional meet.

Under head coach Sergio Lopez, Virginia Tech finished eighth in the team standings at the 2020 ACC Championships and just welcomed an extremely talented first-year class to campus.
