From Club Teammates to College Teammates, Cornell Gets Verbals from Rose Bowl Aquatics’ Amanda Petersen, Alex Syrkin
NEW COMMITS: Cornell University has received a pair of verbal commitments for the 2021-22 season and beyond from current Rose Bowl Aquatics teammates Amanda Petersen of Montrose, Calif. and La Canada, Calif. native Alex Syrkin.
AMANDA PETERSEN
Regarding her commitment, she said:
“I am thrilled to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and swimming career at Cornell University! Huge thanks to everyone who has helped me along the way. GO BIG RED❤️”
Primarily a breaststroker and IMer, Petersen is a Junior National qualifier who most recently placed eighth in the 200 breast at Carlsbad Sectionals after earning four best times at Juniors West in December. Last summer, she finaled in the 50m and 200m breast at NCSAs.
Her best times include:
- 100 breast – 1:03.96
- 200 breast – 2:18.16
- 200 IM – 2:04.04
- 400 IM – 4:24.45
Also competing for Crescenta Valley High School, Petersen is a three-time CIF Central Section Division II Championship finalist. The USA Swimming Scholastic All-American finished second in the 100 breast as a sophomore while taking third in that event as well as 12th in the 200 IM as a freshman.
ALEX SYRKIN
Regarding her commitment, she said:
“I’m so excited to announce my verbal commitment to continue my academic and athletic career at Cornell University! Thank you to my family, coaches, teammates, and friends for all the love and support along the way. Go Big Red! ?❤️”
A strong butterflyer, Syrkin is also a Junior National qualifier and earned a best time at Carlsbad Sectionals in March while finaling in two events at that meet in 2019. She finaled in the 100m fly at NCSAs last long course season en route to notching a lifetime best.
Her best times include:
- 100 fly – 55.73
- 200 fly – 2:05.19
- 50 free – 24.71
- 100 free – 52.22
A rising senior at La Canada High School, Syrkin has competed at the CIF Central Section Division II Championships in 2018 and 2019. As a sophomore, she raced to sixth place in the 100 fly while taking 15th in the 200 free during her rookie campaign.
