Aurelie Muller of France earned the first 2016 Rio Olympic berth for the women by winning the women’s 10K open water race at the 2015 FINA World Championships.
Muller clocked a winning time of 1:58:04.3 during the 10K race to become the first swimmer from France to ever win an open water world title. Previously, France had won three silvers and three bronzes with Muller taking silver in the 5K in 2011.
The Netherlands’ Sharon Van Rouwendaal came charging home to take silver in 1:58:06.7. With the silver, she’s the second woman to win medals in both pool and open water swimming at the World Championships along with a bronze in the 800-meter free in 2011.
