Foster Brothers Lead Strong Effort from the Mason Manta Rays on Second Night of Juniors
The second night of action from the 2017 Speedo Junior Nationals featured eight finals as the Foster brothers from the Mason Manta Rays were again the talk of the session. Carson Foster won the 200 back while his brother Jake Foster won the 400 IM later in the session. The two teamed up with Gordon Wheeler and Adam Chaney to win the 400 free relay to close out the second night of the 2017 Speedo Junior Nationals in East Meadow, New York.
Lucie Nordmann started the night off with a win in the 200 back. She tried to double up in the 100 free but she was beat by UCLA sophomore-to-be Kenisha Liu. USC commit Alexei Sancov won the 100 free to be the only swimmer under 50 seconds in the final.
Lindsay Looney also won the 400 IM after the original winner, Olivia Carter, was disqualified.

Women’s 200 Back
17-year-old Lucie Nordmann of Magnolia Aquatic Club won the 200 back final with a 2:10.99, a little faster than her 2:11.57 this morning. Nordmann won the race ahead of Sinclair Larson of SwimMAC Carolina who placed second at 2:12.92. Fastjets’ Isabelle Stadden (2:13.79) came out of nowhere to finish third at 2:13.79.
Missoula’s Katharine Berkoff (2:13.86), Fort Collins’ Kylee Alons (2:14.43), North Baltimore’s Lauren Poole (2:15.21), Beach Cities’ Alexandra Crisera (2:16.02) and Tide’s Callie Dickinson (2:20.21) also competed in the A-final.
Nordmann is one of the few swimmers in the class of 2018 that has not committed to a school yet. Larson will be headed to Tennessee.

Men’s 200 Back
15-year-old Carson Foster of the Mason Manta Rays won his second title of the meet winning the 200 back on Wednesday night at the 2017 Speedo Junior Nationals in East Meadow, New York. Foster won the 200 fly last night. He will represent the United States at the World Junior Championships at the end of the month in the 200 back. He swam a 1:59.40 to claim gold tonight ahead of Billings’ Ethan Harder (2:00.12) and Metro Atlanta’s Chris Thames (2:01.44). Foster was a little off of the meet record set in 2013 by Alexander Katz (1:58.83).
Academy Bullets’ Spencer Walker (2:01.50), Delaware’s Jake Johnson (2:01.94), Nitro’s Shaine Casas (2:02.26), Scarlet’s Johannes Calloni (2:02.72) and Boise TMCA’s Jackson Cunningham (2:06.46) also competed in the championship final.

Women’s 100 Free
18-year-old Kenisha Liu of Brea Aquatics pulled a minor upset on Magnolia’s Lucie Nordmann in the 100 free final as Liu won with a 55.36 to swim away from Nordmann at 55.76. Liu was the only swimmer under 27 seconds as she won the national title on Wednesday night in East Meadow, New York. Nordmann was fresh off a 200 back win earlier in the night. Carmel’s Kelly Pash was third at 56.05 as the top two were the only swimmers under 56 seconds.
Chelsea Piers’ Kate Douglass (56.16), Beach Cities’ Alexandra Crisera (56.29), Carmel’s Trude Rothrock (56.30), Socal’s Elise Garcia (56.57) and Greater Tampa’s Morgan Tankersley (57.08) also competed in the A-final.
Liu just finished her freshman season at UCLA.

Men’s 100 Free
Moldova native Alexei Sancov of the Terrapins Swim Team won the 100 free final with the only swim under 50 seconds. Sancov swam a 49.78 to win the event on Wednesday night in East Meadow, New York at the Speedo Junior Nationals. Pleasantville’s Destin Lasco (50.46) and Lakeside’s Alexander Zettle (50.52) followed him.
Nitro’s Shaine Casas (50.84), SwimMAC’s Jack Walker (50.92), Mississippi Mako’s Blaise Vera (51.25), Portland’s Sid Farber (51.35) and Boise YMCA’s Thomas Roark (51.71) also competed in the championship final.
Sancov has verbally committed to Southern Cal for the class of 2022. Zettle has also already announced his verbal commitment as he will join the University of Texas in the fall of 2018.

Women’s 400 IM
In a big turn of events, Lindsay Looney of Metroplex won a tight 400 IM final thanks to a stellar last 100. Looney was about fifth place at the 300 turn and swam a 1:02.76 on the last 100. Looney touched at 4:47.42 to out-touch Kristen Romano (4:47.47) of Long Island and Katie Glavinovich of Aquazot (4:47.60). Looney did not originally touch first as Enfinity’s Olivia Carter was going for her second win of the meet after she won the 200 fly last night, but she was disqualified, so Looney moved up to be the champion in the race.
Michigan Lakeshore’s Kathryn Ackerman (4:49.46), Asphalt Green’s Isabel Gormley (4:51.64), Sandpipers’ Erica Sullivan (4:51.88) and Sandpipers’ Grace Siebmann (4:56.37) also swam in the championship final.

Men’s 400 IM
The Mason Manta Rays picked up another win on the men’s side at the 2017 Speedo Junior Nationals in East Meadow, New York. This time it was 16-year-old Jake Foster picking up the 400 IM title after his brother Carson won the 200 back earlier. Jake won the 400 IM with a 4:19.40 thanks to a monster back half. North Texas’ Jack LeVant (4:22.11) and Pitchfork’s Jarod Arroyo (4:22.30) had a close battle for second behind him.
Davis Aquadarts’ Luca Urlando (4:24.60), Pleasanton’s Christopher Jhong (4:25.55), La Mirada’s Kevin Vargas (4:27.04), Condors’ Michael Daly (4:29.96) and Lawrence County’s Paul Gabhart (4:31.39) also competed in the A-final.
LeVant has already announced his commitment to Stanford for the fall of 2018.

Women’s 400 Free Relay
The women’s 400 free relay was tight throughout the top five teams were all within a second of each other at the finish. Austin Swim Club came out on top at 3:47.87 with Diana Dunn (56.75), Dakota Luther (56.75), Ella Collins (56.92) and Quinn Schaedler (57.45). They held off a hard charging SwimMAC Carolina who finished second at 3:47.90 with Sophie Lindner (57.05), Julia Menkhaus (56.95), Katie Corbi (57.44) and Olwyn Bartis (56.46). Lakeside Aquatic Club was winning through 300 meters but ultimately ended up third with a 3:48.26. Katherine Zenick (57.86), Lauren Pitzer (55.38), Samantha Porter (57.02) and Kara Eisenmann (58.00) swam for Lakeside.
The fastest split in the field went to Lucie Nordmann on the anchor for Magnolia Aquatic Club with a 54.83. She was the only swimmer under 55 and was one of three swimmers under 56 including Pitzer and Bloomington’s Grace Ariola (55.56).
Magnolia (3:48.61), Carmel (3:48.92), Mason Manta Rays (3:49.26), Waves Bloomington (3:49.71) and SwimMAC Carolina B (3:49.92) also placed in the top eight.

Men’s 400 Free Relay
Mason Manta Rays won another race on the second night of action at the 2017 Speedo Junior Nationals thanks to a stellar back half. They anchored with the Foster brothers who have been tearing it up in East Meadow with three individual wins for the two of them. Gordon Wheeler (52.67), Adam Chaney (51.35), Jake Foster (51.52) and Carson Foster (49.92) swam a 3:25.46 for the win. The Fosters each won an individual event tonight with Jake winning the 400 IM and Carson winning the 200 back.
SwimMAC Carolina finished in second at 3:26.53 with Will Chan (51.99), Boyd Poelke (51.75), Tim Connery (51.94) and Jack Walker (50.85) swimming for them. Irvine Novaquatics was third at 3:26.79 with Owen Kao (52.24), Andrew Koustik (50.98), Sean Slusiewicz (51.74) and Hunter Hitchens (51.83).
Alexei Sancov had the fastest split of the field with a 49.50 on the second leg for Terrapins. Other fast splits were from Alexander Zettle (50.06), Will Davis (50.33) and Shaine Casas (50.47).
Bolles School (3:27.53), Nitro (3:27.92), Lakeside (3:28.08), Terrapins (3:28.13) and Katy (3:28.67) also finished in the top eight.
