Florida Wins 22 Events in Near Identical Sweep of Rival Florida State

Florida won 22 events across both meets as the Gators swept in-state rival Florida State by nearly identical scores.

The No. 3 Florida women’s team claimed a 182-118 win. The fourth-ranked men top No. 16 Florida State, 181-119.

Isabel Ivey led Florida’s efforts on the women’s side. Ivey won the 100 backstroke in 52.50 seconds, a 1-2 finish with teammate Catherine Choate. Ivey then won the 100 freestyle in 48.69 seconds, then claimed the 200 individual medley in 1:57.32. For good measure, she contributed a leg on the 200 free relay victory.

The 100 free was a momentum changer, Ivey leading Micayla Cronk and Ekaterina Nikonova in a 1-2-3 result.

The meet started in fantastic fashion with Florida winning the 200 medley relay by .01 seconds. Choate, Molly Mayne, Olivia Peoples and Cronk went 1:37.77, Cronk rallying for the win in 22.04 seconds off the end to recoup a half-second deficit. Cronk won the 50 free in 22.79.

The Gators’ distance contingent started strong. Emma Weyant won the 1,000 free in 9:38.64, with Bella Sims second. Sims turned around to win the 200 free in 1:47.06, with Weyant second. Weyant added a third-place finish in the 200 back. Sims teamed with Ivey, Nikonova and Cronk for a 1:31.04 winning time in the 200 free relay.

Choate added a win in the 200 back in 1:55.63. Peoples claimed the 100 fly in 52.59. Camyla Monroy swept diving golds, scoring 345.00 on 3-meter and 302.45 on 1-meter, the latter a 1-2 result with Carina Lumia.

Breaststroke was the source of many of Florida State’s points. Maddy Huggins won the 100 breast in 1:00.46 with Julia Mansson third. Mansson turned it around in the 200, with a 2:13.28 that edged Huggins by .17 seconds. Edith Jernstedt won the 200 fly in 1:56.25 ahead of teammate Sophie Freeman and was second in the 200 IM. Maysa Ratiu won the 500 free in 4:52.12 after having finished second in the 200 free.

Seven different Gators won individual races, plus two divers in a sweep on the boards. The big blow came in the 100 back, with Cam Abaqueta winning in 47.43, followed by Adam Chaney’s 47.48 and Caleb Madari’s 47.50. Madari would win the 200 back. Chaney led off the winning 200 free relay.

Aryan Nehra (1,000 free), Jake Mitchell (200 free), Mason Laur (200 fly), Andrew Taylor (500 free) and Scotty Buff (100 fly) comprised the parade of winners. Peyton Donald scored 373.75 to roll to victory on 1-meter diving, and Conor Gesing’s 391.60 on 3-meter was just enough to edge Florida State’s Darwin Nolasco by just a point, Nolasco second in both.

Florida State had the speed if not the depth. The Seminoles started by winning the 200 medley relay in 1:26.63 with the squad of Mason Herbet, Marcos Egri-Martin, Tobias Schulrath and Peter Varjasi. Varjasi won the 50 free in 19.88 and the 100 in 42.86, both at the expense of Macguire McDuff. Tommaso Baravelli swept the breaststroke events and the 200 IM.
