Florida Swimming Vanquishes Vanderbilt On the Road

The Florida swimming team started their dual meet portion of the season with a road trip to compete against fellow Southeastern Conference team Vanderbilt University, and won decisively 193-69.

The Gators were able to win every event except the 100 breaststroke, where Vanderbilt’s Kathryn Coughlin held off Hannah Burns with a 1:04.64 to Burns’ 1:04.86.

Florida swept the top three places in five events. Taylor Katz led things off with a 10:10.53 in the 1000 free, with teammates Autumn Fink (10:14.02) and Burns (10:18.94) not far behind. In the very next event, the 200 freestyle, Natalie Hinds put up a 1:49.56 to win by three seconds over Georgia Marris. Florida’s Jessica Thielmann wrapped up the sweep with a 1:53.36.

The 100 freestyle gave Mollie Pulte the win by six hundredths of a second over Amelia Maughan, 51.75 to 51.81. Just five tenths behind Maughan was Elisavet Panti with a 52.30. Florida kept the streak going in the 200 backstroke, where Alyssa Yambor-Maul posted a 2:01.75 to dominate the field. Sierra Kuhn finished second with a 2:04.12 and Chelsea Lawson took third in 2:05.17.

The final 1-2-3 sweep for Florida came in the 200 IM, with Georgia Mae-Hohmann winning with a 2:04.04. She was never challenged, as Paige Scheriger took a distant second with a 2:07.43 and Thielmann was third with a 2:08.80.

Other wins for Florida included:

 Hohmann leading a 1-2 finish in the 100 back with a 54.98 to Sydney Sells’ 55.80;
 Yambor-Maul winning the 200 fly with a 2:01.45, beating the 2:03.43 by Vanderbilt’s Kayla Moran;
 Maughan winning the 50 free over Pulte, 23.87 to 24.17;
 Scheriger taking the 200 breast with a 2:18.63 as teammate Burns placed second in 2:20.37;
 Finke taking the 500 free with a 5:00.93, beating teammate Tyla Martin by nearly nine seconds;
 Hinds winning the 100 fly in 54.93 by a second over Vanderbilt’s Breanna Sapienza;
 A 3:45.20 to win the 400 medley relay to start the meet and a 1:35.06 to take the 200 free relay.
