Florida State Hires Kyle Cormier as Assistant Coach

Florida State on Friday announced the hiring of Kyle Cormier as an assistant coach to the swimming and diving staff.

The former pro swimmer will be responsible for directing operations of the swim team. Cormier was a volunteer assistant last season at Florida International. He helped FIU finish second at the American Athletic Conference Championships.

“It is a dream come true to join an athletic department and team like the one we have here in Tallahassee,” Cormier said in a university statement.  “My family and I are beyond excited to be a part of the FSU community. There truly is everything we need to have a championship program that not only can develop maximum potential as athletes but also as people. Florida State is a special place and I feel tremendous privilege to be a Seminole.”

Cormier was a standout at the University of South Carolina, where he was a three-time team captain and two-time All-American. The team MVP in 2007 and 2009, he qualified for U.S. Olympic Trials in 2008 and 2012. He left school with program records in the 100 free (which stood for 12 years), the 200 free (still No. 2 in Gamecocks history) and 200 IM.

He swam professionally from 2010-12 at Mecklenburg Aquatic Club.

“We are really excited to welcome Kyle and his family to Tallahassee,” Florida State head coach Neal Studd said.  “We could not be happier to welcome someone with his experience, having been a head club coach. I am thrilled to add a new coaching position that will enhance our already highly experienced staff.  It feels great to be able to offer our student-athletes the very best quality in coaching and resources to help them achieve their goals.  I also want to thank the administration for letting us add this position to strengthen our team.  We can’t wait for the season to start.”

Cormier began coaching at Little Rock Dolphin Swim Team in 2013. He would move on to become a graduate assistant at Missouri State from 2014-16, leading the sprint group while receiving his master’s degree in sports and fitness administration/management.

From 2017-22, Cormier was the head coach and CEO of the City of Mobile Swim Association. He coached 14 Alabama high school champions, four state-record holders, 17 college swimmers and earned USA Swimming Bronze Medal Club of Excellence status each year.
