Florida Gators Secure Class of 2026 Verbal from Versatile Cam Abaqueta of SwimMAC

NEW COMMIT: The University of Florida has received their second verbal commitment for the 2022-23 season and beyond from versatile Cam Abaqueta of Davidson, N.C.

He will join in-stater Dawson Joyce of Sanford, Fla. in Gainesville as a member of the Gators’ Class of 2026.

Regarding his commitment, he said:

“I’m extremely excited and humbled to announce my verbal commitment to continue my swimming and academic career at the University of Florida! I want to thank all of my family, my friends, my coaches, and anyone who has helped me get to where I am today. Go Gators! ??”

Abaqueta, who does his club swimming with SwimMAC Carolina, most recently competed at the 18&U Winter Championships in North Carolina where he won posted six top-6 finishes. He placed fourth in the 100m back at Cary Sectionals back in March and raced seven events at Juniors East last December.

In Summer 2019, he finaled in four events at North Carolina LCM Seniors before going on to earn three best times at Junior Nationals.

His best times include:

  • 50 free – 20.76
  • 100 free – 45.10
  • 200 free – 1:52.99
  • 100 back – 48.09
  • 200 back – 1:49.68
  • 100 breast – 54.05
  • 200 breast – 2:04.44
  • 100 fly – 48.68
  • 200 IM – 1:48.01

Currently a junior at the Cannon School, Abaqueta is already a four-time North Carolina Independent Schools State Championship finalist. He won the 50 free and 100 back as a sophomore while taking third and first, respectively, in those events during his freshman season.

He has also earned USA Swimming Scholastic All-American honors for his efforts in the pool and in the classroom.

The Gators won their eighth-straight SEC title in 2020 under head coach Anthony Nesty.
