FLASH! Noè Ponti Takes Down His 50 Fly WR In 21.43

Noè Ponti lowered his own 50 fly WR in a time of 21.43 on day one of the short-course worlds in Budapest.

The Swiss athlete served notice of his intention in prelims when he stopped the clock in 21.53, 0.03 off the WR he set at the Singapore leg of the World Cup. That re-set the meet record.

He returned to the Duna Arena for the semis where he sliced 0.07 off his own mark in the semis and has an0ther chance to lower it still further in Wednesday’s final.

It was the third WR of the evening following Summer McIntosh in the 400 free and Gretchen Walsh in the women’s 50 fly and the fourth overall while still on the first day in the Hungarian capital. It continues a trend of Ponti’s unparalleled dominance in this event, the Swiss man owning it like few swimmers ever had in a single event.

He said: “I did everything fine, I didn’t think a lot about it. I was very focused, I wanted to swim fast – that’s it!”

Ponti recognised that while he once more wrote a line in the history books, he has still to claim the title on Wednesday which – should he succeed – would be the first global short-course gold.

“It was a nice race and as I said in other interviews, I can swim as many world records as I want but what’s most important is to swim fast tomorrow because I know that the guys are right there and the smallest mistake can be costly.”

He said: “Everything is important. One mistake and it’s gone.”
