Flash: Ilya Shymanovich Shaves .02 off World Record in 100 Breast
Energy Standard’s Ilya Shymanovich won the men’s 100 breaststroke in 55.32 seconds Friday, lowering his world record by .02 seconds.
Shymanovich won the race at ISL Playoff Match 3. He takes down his time from Brest in his native Belarus last December at 55.34. It also downs the ISL record that Adam Peaty set in 2020 at 55.41. He did the job on the first 50, going out .11 faster than when he set the world record.
Shymanovich’s splits:
- 2020: 25.88 – 29.46 – 55.34
- Friday: 25.77 – 29.55 – 55.32
“It’s amazing,” Shymanovich said on the ISL broadcast. “I don’t know what happened, but it’s happened.”
He also added that it was, “just my personal best.” He alluded to a little disappointment after losing out to Nicolo Martinenghi in the men’s 50 breast on Thursday.
Shymanovich did win the 200 breast. His win is his 13th of the season.
The world record is the third of the season in ISL, joining Coleman Stewart’s mark in the 100 backstroke and Shymanovich tying Cameron van der Burgh’s mark in the 50 breast at 25.25.
