Five-Time Texas 6A State Finalist Emma Wheal Selects Stanford
NEW COMMIT: Stanford has picked up a verbal commitment from Austin, Texas’ Emma Wheal who will make her way to The Farm next fall. She will join Kira Crage and Alexandra Crisera as a member of the class of 2023.
Wheal does her club swimming with Western Hills Athletic Club and owns a trio of U.S. Open cuts. She earned the bronze in the 50m free at Junior Nationals this summer and placed 16th in the 100m free after racing the splash-and-dash at Nationals a week prior. She recorded a lifetime best at TYR Pro Swim Series Austin and had five second-swims at College Station Sectionals in March.
Also swimming for Westlake High School, Wheal is a five-time Texas 6A State Championship finalist. She finished second in the 50 free and third in the 100 free as a junior after placing third and second, respectively, in those events during her sophomore season. She has also earned NISCA All-American honors twice in her career.
She told Swimming World:
“Going to Stanford is a dream come true for me. The team, coaches and academics are unparalleled, and I’m so excited to spend the next 4 years on the farm!”
Her best times include:
- 50 free – 22.62
- 100 free – 49.81
- 100 fly – 54.16
- 100 back – 56.74
When she suits up for Stanford at the start of the 2019-20 season, Wheal will add valuable depth to a loaded Cardinal sprint group that includes Taylor Ruck, Lauren Pitzer and Lucie Nordmann. Wheal would’ve scored in the B-final of the 50 free and the C-final of the 100 free and 100 fly at the 2018 Pac-12 Championships where Stanford won their 21st overall conference crown before earning their second-straight National title.
