Final Four Named for Women’s NCAA Water Polo Tournament
LOS ANGELES, April 29. UCLA's defending national collegiate champ women's water polo squad will play crosstown neighbor Loyola-Marymount and Stanford will take on Michigan in the NCAA Final Four, slated for May 11-12 at USC.
The tournament will be a single-elimination affair with the winners playing for the NCAA title Sunday afternoon.
UCLA defeated top-sseded Stanford, 11-7, Sunday at SC to win the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championship and earn the automatic tourney bid.
Stanford (21-2) was selected as the at-large team with Loyola (2-=7), an 8-5 winner yesterday over U Cal San Diego in the finals of the Western Water Polo Assn. tourney also qualifying, along with Michigan (26-11), Eastern champs.
If, as expected, UCLA and Stanford meet in the championship matchup, it will be a repeat of last year's title game, won by the Bruins over the Cardinal
at Stanford — which, in turn, reversed the outcome of the MPSF tourney, won by Stanford.
The Bruins and Cardinal have faced each other four times this season, with Stanford holding a 3-1 advantage. However, the Bruins' win over the Cardinal was the biggest as it gave them the MPSF Championship.
