DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, December 19. USA's Rebecca Soni continued to demonstrate just how dominant she is in the breaststroke. Tonight, she won the women's 200 breast with open water at the FINA World Short Course Championships.
Soni clocked a time of 2:16.39 that beat her meet record of 2:18.66 set during prelims. The preliminary swim also stood as the American record, even though Soni's world record of 2:14.57 from last December was not ratified by USA Swimming. The national federation has not recognized any techsuit swims done after the organization implemented a ban domestically in Oct. 2009, even for swims done legally under FINA regulations prior to the worldwide ban on Jan. 1, 2010.
China's Sun Ye earned second in 2:18.09 to move to second in the rankings and break the Chinese record of 2:18.86 set by Qi Hui back in 2002. Denmark's Rikke Moeller Pederson completed the podium with a third-place 2:18.82.
Russia's Yuliya Efimova (2:19.69), Canada's Martha McCabe (2:20.61), China's Ji Liping (2:21.05), Japan's Rie Kaneto (2:22.11) and Jamaica's Alia Atkinson (2:25.49) made up the rest of the championship heat.
