FINA World Short Course Championships: Dutch 1-2 In 50 Free

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates, December 19. THE Netherlands went 1-2 in the women's 50 free demonstrating the country's dominance in women's sprint free at the FINA World Short Course Championships.
Ranomi Kromowidjojo clocked a strong time of 23.37, just missing Marleen Veldhuis' world record of 23.25 set in 2008. Kromowidjojo jumped up to fourth in the all-time rankings behind only Veldhuis, Therese Alshammar (23.27) and Hinkelien Schreuder (23.32).
Schreuder, meanwhile, snared second in 23.81 to improve upon her second-ranked season best of 23.90 from the European Short Course Championships. Bahamas' Arianna Vanderpool-Wallace raced to third in 24.04 to complete the podium.
USA's Jessica Hardy finished just off the podium with a fourth-place 24.09, while Estonia's Triin Aljand wound up fifth in 24.16. China's Li Zhesi (24.18), Canada's Victoria Poon (24.19) and Germany's Dorothea Brandt (24.21) also vied for the world title. Poon downed her Canadian standard of 24.24 set last year.
