FINA World Cup Indianapolis Day 3 Prelims: Dylan Carter Aiming For Title

The 2022 FINA World Cup Indianapolis stop continued on Saturday from the Indiana Natatorium with the last day of prelims.

The top eight qualified for the finals – the final session of this year’s World Cup.

In the men’s 400 IM, Canada took the top two seeds with Finlay Knox touching the wall first in 4:07.09 and Ilya Kharun was second (4:11.58). Germany’s Cedric Bussing took the third seed in 4:11.76.

In the women’s 100 butterfly, Sweden’s Louise Hansson took the top spot in 55.67, holding off USA’s Alex Shackell (56.81), Gabi Albiero (57.32) and France’s Beryl Gastaldello (57.62).

In the men’s 50 butterfly, Trinidad and Tobago’s Dylan Carter took the top spot in 22.44 as he aims to take the overall title. Khan was second in 22.67, doing a quick double, and Germany’s Marius Kusch took third in 22.67.

In the women’s 200 backstroke, USA’s Jojo Ramey took the top seed in 2:04.36 and will be in the middle of the pool in finals. Bella Sims, who broke two world junior records on Day 2, took the second seed in 2:04.50, followed by fellow American Beata Nelson (2:04.54) and Canada’s Kylie Masse (2:05.44).

In the men’s 100 backstroke, Canada’s Javier Acevedo took the top seed in a loaded field at the FINA World Cup. He touched the wall in 50.42. USA’s Coleman Stewart was second at 50.54, followed by Shaine Casas (50.57), Ryan Murphy (50.68) and Poland’s Kacper Stokowski (50.70).

In the women’s 50 breaststroke, Lilly King broke 30 seconds to earn the top seed for finals. She finished in 29.96, ahead of Lithuania’s Ruta Meilutyte (30.36) and Slovakia’s Andrea Podmankiova (30.59) and Brazil’s Jhennifer Conceicao (30.75).

In the men’s 200 breaststroke, USA’s Reece Whitley took the top spot in 2:05.86, holding off the field by nearly a second. Japan’s Yoshiki Yamanaka took the second seed in 2:06.80, followed by Brandon Fischer (2:06.93) and Will Licon (2:07.07).

The women’s 100 free was also stacked at the FINA World Cup stop. Hong Kong’s Siobhan Haughey and USA’s Abbey Weitzeil tied for the top seed with swims of 51.86. They were in the same heat and touched together. Australia’s Madison Wilson took the third seed in 52.15, followed by USA’s Natalie Hinds (52.31), Poland’s Kasia Wasick (52.49) and France’s Beryl Gastaldello (52.71).

The men’s 200 free saw Lithuania’s Danas Rapsys take the top seed with a swim of 1:42.63. USA’s Drew Kibler took the second seed in 1:43.14, followed by Netherlands’ Luc Kroon (1:43.39), USA’s Kieran Smith (1:43.43), Australia’s Kyle Chalmers (1:43.82) and USA’s Trenton Julian (1:43.92).

The last spot in the finals required a swim-off and Jake Magahey used a late surge to win that swim-off and reach the finals.

The women’s 200 IM closed the traditional heats and had a loaded field. Canada’s Sydney Pickrem touched the wall in 2:08.07, just ahead of USA’s Leah Hayes (2:08.12). Beata Nelson was next at 2:08.78 followed by Canada’s Bailey Andison (2:09.20), USA’s Bella Sims (2:08.37), Canada’s Kelsey Wog (2:08.49), Israel’s Anastasia Gorbenko (2:09.66) and USA’s Izzy Ivey (2:10.14).
