ROME, Italy, August 1. BRAZIL's Cesar Cielo put together a strong swim to claim his second sprint world title of the meet in the 50 free at the FINA World Championships.
Cielo clocked a meet record time of 21.08 to lay claim to the splash-and-dash title. He lowered the 21.20 set by Trinidad and Tobago's George Bovell during a swimoff to make this championship final. The 21.08 is also the second-fastest time ever behind only Fred Bousquet's 20.94. Cielo chipped away from his top time of 21.14.
Bousquet led a French 2-3 on the podium with a 21.21, while Amaury Leveaux finished third overall in 21.25.
Croatia's Duje Draganja touched outside of the medals with a fourth-place 21.38, while Cullen Jones of the U.S. took fifth in 21.47. Nathan Adrian of the U.S. finished sixth in 21.49, while Bovell placed seventh in 21.51. Sweden's Stefan Nystrand rounded out the heat with an eighth-place 21.53.
