Joseph Schooling led the 100 fly through every round at the Olympics in Rio last summer, finishing with his first Olympic gold medal, and it would be a surprise if he does not add another gold in the event at the FINA World Championships.

Schooling finished in 50.39, making him the fastest performer ever in a textile suit and third-fastest in history. After taking down Michael Phelps to win Olympic gold, he has made no secret of the fact that he is gunning for Phelps’ world record of 49.82.

Chad Le Clos and Laszlo Cseh finished 1-2 in the event at the last World Championships, and those two, along with Phelps, shared Olympic silver last summer. Surely, both will be in the mix here.

As for Caeleb Dressel, who enters the meet with the No. 1 time in the world, he will to deal with a double on day seven, with the 100 fly final coming shortly after his 50 free final. He took down Schooling to win the NCAA title in the 100-yard fly in March, but a repeat upset in Budapest would surely be shocking.

Read below to see what Swimming World’s trio of experts think will happen in Budapest. David RiederJohn Lohn and Andy Ross will each offer their predictions for who will finish on the podium.

Don’t be naive. Just one good performance does not mean Dressel will get Gold. He has no track records in major meets so choosing Schooling is more realistic.

” no track records in major meets”??? I guess the Rio Olympics is the same as a community pool meet ha ? He delivered huge in Rio in the 4×100 free relay ( why do you think they had him as first leg if not for his explosiveness and collegiate experience?) and he also did well in the 100 free finals. He is cool and calm when you see him at the meets and he will win the 100 fly as well as the 50 free ( imho)

Not being Naive. The drive Dressel has far exceeds that of many of his competitors. He swims with heart……..You just have to know him to completely understand.

Yes, Dressel swam well in Rio Olympics relay but relay gold is definitely not as prestigious as individual gold. He has not swum the 100 fly in world stage so there are uncertainties.

There is just a difference between him and the others….. like I said you just have to know him, how he trains, how he processes the bad moments, what his beliefs are…. just different. Just my opinion.

There’s just no other person on the planet that moves in the water as quickly as he does at this point.

The hundred fly is an odd bird. Not quite a sprint but not a 2OO by any means, either. All in pacing in letting go. You choose. May the best man win!

Schooling has been beating dressel a major majority of the time in yards fly since high school, and dressel has put up one good meters time and it was this season. Joe has the fastest or a tick off the best textile time ever, and has yet to have any real reason to be fully rested or shaved before worlds. As much as I don’t want to say it, Joe is taking this.
