Expelled Brazilian Swimmer Ana Carolina Vieira Exploring Legal Options

Swimmer Ana Carolina Vieira, who was sent home from the Paris Olympics by the Brazilian Swimming Federation, is exploring legal options after her expulsion.

Vieira spoke out on Instagram, saying she felt “helpless” in having to return immediately to her native Sao Paolo without her belongings.

“I have already filed a complaint of harassment and nothing has been resolved, harassment within the team,” she said. “I will speak to my lawyers. I promise to tell everything. I am sad, nervous, but with a peace of mind because I know who I am, I know what my character and my nature are.”

Vieira was sent home by the Brazilian Olympic Committee for leaving the Olympic Village without permission and for being “disrespectful and aggressively challenging” of team officials. She and partner Gabriel Santos left the village Saturday night after both swam in prelims of Brazilian 400 free relays that didn’t make it out of prelims. Santos received a warning and was allowed to stay, but Vieira was sent home, in part due to her response to the admonished.

“We’re here working for Brazil, for the 200 million taxpayers who are working for us,” Brazil swimming official and Olympic delegation leader Gustavo Otsuka said in a statement. “We can’t play around here. She took a completely inappropriate position to make her point, her dismay, about the formation of the relay.”

The 22-year-old Vieira is in her second Olympics, having been in Tokyo three years ago, again as a relay-only swimmer. Santos is competing in the Olympics for the third time for Brazil. He is not slated to swim again at this meet.

Vieira’s message also thanked her fans and supporters, vowing that, “Thank god, I will prove everything, that I did not have bad behavior.”
