European Short-Course Champion Luc Kroon Announces Retirement

Luc Kroon, winner of the 400 free at the 2021 European Short-Course Championships, has announced his retirement.

The Netherlands athlete made the decision after sustaining an injury last week which would keep him out of the water until January 2025.

That followed two years marked by knee surgery, burst eardrums and sickness.

The 23-year-old enjoyed a fine 2021, claiming silver as a prelims swimmer with the mixed 4×100 free at the European Championships in Budapest before a successful campaign for Toronto Titans in the International Swimming League (ISL).

Kroon won 400 gold at the continental 25m meet in Kazan, Russia, where he set a Dutch record of 3:38.33, as well as silver behind David Popovici in the 200.

He concluded his year at the World Short-Course Championships in Abu Dhabi where he finished sixth in the 400 as well as anchoring the Netherlands 4×100 medley relay to sixth in a national record of 3:26.59.
